      13. January 2014.
Just like every year, FEST brings us the premieres of the best Holywood has to offer.

Just like every year, FEST brings us the premieres of the best Holywood has to offer. A total of 12 film from this year's repertoire has been nominated for the Academy Awards in at least one cathegory, with the absolute leader in that race being  12 Years a Slave  with as much as nine nominations. The favourite, according to the critics, for snatching an Oscar for best film and best director (Steve McQueen), but Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o are not without a chance. This is Lupita's first role and she will be competing against the veteran Julia Roberts (August: Osage County). Meryl Streep, according to many the best living actress, has beaten her own record for most nominations (18 in total) and if she wins, it will have been her fourth Oscar. Judy Dench is in the same category for her role in Philomena, while the greatest contender for Merryl's Oscar is Cate Blanchet, for her brilliant performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, which she was already rewarded for several times, including the Golden Globe. Allen is also nominated for best original script and he also is one of the recorders with his four Oscars and 24 nominations.

Second on the list (total nominations) are Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska with six nominations each. Both are running up for best film, best script and best male character. Old school Bruce Dern could well lose against Matthew David McConaughey who was nominated this year for the first time, while Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey have already gotten their Golden Globes for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club.  Contenders for best script (original or adapted) are Philomena, 12 Years a Slave  and Her by Spike Jonze, who has won the Golden Globe in that category. The Great Beauty also won the Globe and was nominated for best film. The Danish film The Hunt, one of the best films from last year's FEST, is in the same race. In less glamorous categories, we will see  Inside Llewyn Davis (best camera and sound), Ralph Fiennes' Invisible Woman (best costume), The Book Thief  for best music and All is lost  for best sound editing (Golden Globe for best original music). Finally, we will see Behind the Candelabra, which was awarded the Golden Globe for best TV film and best role (Michael Douglas), as well as the EMI award (Golden Statue for the director Steven Sodherberg).
